The Rise of DIY Home IP Cameras
The new trend in CCTV sees many network equipment manufacturers producing DIY-style cameras. These devices are extremely easy to install; all you need to do is power them on, pair the CCTV camera with your home network, insert a memory card, and you’re good to go. These DIY home IP cameras can even record sound and are Wi-Fi connected. You can set up features like motion detection, line crossing detection, or even human detection. When intruders cross the line or are detected, the IP camera will trigger an alert.

Professional IP cameras provide clearer and sharper images, even when they share the same specifications as DIY home IP cameras. This is because professional cameras use superior chipsets, IC components, and lenses. We’ve been receiving many phone call inquiries recently, about 3 to 5 per day, from people asking for help with their alarm systems because their original installers are no longer reachable. If your home CCTV or alarm system is experiencing false alarms, it’s most likely due to wiring issues. Based on our experience, in 98 out of 100 houses where we’ve helped troubleshoot alarm systems, we found that the wiring is excessively looped through “too many sensor points”. Additionally, many alarm wires were spliced (sambung wayar) using leftover cables.
In some cases, customers already know their wiring has problems but pretend they don’t. They call us, asking for the price of a new alarm system and get us to install it, hoping we’ll fix their wiring for free. We usually ask for a few photos before proceeding with anything else, such as photos of the motherboard and the windows. When we see the motherboard photo, we can immediately tell if the alarm technicians are playing tricks. For a double-storey terrace house (windows fitted with metal grills), there are typically around 20 wires. If you only have 5 to 7 wires, it means the wiring is heavily looped with many points. With so few wires available, even if you install a new alarm system, you will still experience false alarms. This is the reality, but many customers refuse to accept it and think we’re just bullshiting. Do we not want the business or the money? The truth is, we want to help, but if you continue to have problems after installation, we don’t want to damage our reputation. Unless you redo all the wiring, it won’t be okay. But if you live there, redoing the wiring will require heavy hacking which is very dusty. So next time you buy a bungalow, remember to do it right the first time.
Please note that while the quality of the product is important, the design of the wiring and the positioning of cameras and sensors are even more essential. The quality of workmanship also plays a significant role in ensuring the effectiveness of your security system. Just having the products on hand doesn’t guarantee you know how to apply them effectively and efficiently.
Market Price For Alarm and CCTV Systems
For your reference, the cost for an alarm system and wiring in a double-storey terrace house with all windows fitted with metal grills would be around RM6,000 to RM 7,000. If the price is below that, don’t be fooled—nightmares will come very soon. Everything has a market price; there’s no such thing as below market price. For a double-storey terrace house with windows that do not have metal grills installed, the cost would be around RM 10,000 to RM 15,000. The prices above are just guidelines.
